The Flypaper Foamie Challenge - 2019
« on: November 23, 2018, 02:42:47 PM »
In honour of Gord, why don't we have a foamie building challenge this winter, final presentation and award ceremony to take place in the spring?
First of all we have to decide whether it's just a undefined category or whether we should have a specific challenge, like high-wing, delta, twin, or something like that. We could have different awards like best self-designed, funniest, slowest, most colurful..etc.
How many of you are up for this - Gary, Dwayne, or anyone else who is hot-glue certified or a graduate the Flypaper School of Aeronutical Knowledge?
Ideas everybody? Let's set up the "rules" and do it!

Ok, Reg, you asked for it!

IT IS ON!  :P  :P  :P

I have a couple of uncompleted Unidentifiable Flying Objects, very Flypaperish in nature. I am immediately resuming work on one of them. The glue gun is HOT.

As for "rules"  :o - we don't need no stinkin' rules.  None of Gordy's UFOs looked like they obeyed any rules, did they?

OK, Reg, the contest is sort of under way. DuWayne thinks it is a great idea - so, let's see if he puts his (money? glue gun?) where his mouth is.  :P  :P

I will soon post a really nice picture of my initial entry. It is/was a beautiful design! I used the traditional TLAR approach, trying to end up with a TFAR machine. We fell a bit short of the objective. I had one flight, it was pretty hairy at first, I got it tamed down somewhat but decided " enough is enough".
So, I carved it up into little pieces in order to recycle the hardware into my next entry - the X-41. Stay tuned.

As for the contest itself:

Should we have a kick-off session at one of the local watering holes?
Do we allow and "secret projects"? Or, do all entries have to be revealed prior to First Flight? (That could be interesting, just to see how delusional the designer/builder is.)
Where will the awards banquet be held?
Will there be cake? (We already know you like chocolate, Reg.)

Great news, Dwayne
There will be two categories for entries; pre-announced, and secret!
At the event, prizes will be awarded for:

Most novel design
Best self-design
Biggest flop (failure to fly, or spectacular crash)
Best performance (as judged by peers -slowest fastest, etc)
Best paint job

Other rules:
No limit on number of planes/pilot entered.
No planes we have previously seen in the air at Wilton
Each plane entered can only win one award
All entries must be srcatchbuilt (no kits) and substantially constructed of foam and hot glue, and must contain at least 50% Dollar store foam.

I think the awards banquet should be decided by a meeting of the core builders group..

Any other thoughts?

Proof required!

Must post, RIGHT IN HERE, at least 1picture prior to the maiden flight and another after that flight.
Extra brownie points for a video of all or part of a flight.
Even more kudos for a write-up and/or pictures of its construction.

I'm confused (ing)
I thought the Wilton event would include both secret and non-secret planes, and that the maidening might be done before or during the Gordo Foamie Fiasco
Anybody that wants to post stuff ahead can, or keep the whole damn thing secret. Me, I'm going to show one ahead, and probably bring two other "secret" entries.

Good points!

Suggestion:
So, you can keep it secret up to the completion of the maiden flight, which must be witnessed by someone, but then you have to poney up with the appropriate proofs. Comments?

Great news!  A third participant in the Foamerama has presented his entries, our own Terry Haley with two great 3D models with great paint schemes!
So far we have 3 entrants and 5 models going forward. C'mon you stalwarts, get in on the fun. If you want designs, there are tons of them on RCGroups-Scratchbuilt foamie thread.
Calling Dwayne, Roger, Harold, Wilf - get on it! Build a fun foamie and we'll have a great day! And hopefully there will be food as well.
See if you can beat this - https://youtu.be/6-gcvsB9bB4

Just a suggestion, this could be in the KRCM event and activities thread, would get more visibility

Actually, it's not supposed to have any visibility, it's sort of a "virtual" contest, you see. Just two of Flypaper's old flying buddies goading each other on in the spirit of the Master. Terry sort of seems to have gotten caught up in it somehow, as well - go figure!

These days in our Club, most guys buy ARFs, a few still build from kits and the occasional hard core types design and build their own balsa machines. There are only a couple of us who enjoy wasting our time creating cheap crap that may, or may not, fly very well but provide great amusement for ourselves and our many admiring onlookers. (Well, perhaps not all that many, but who doesn't like to witness the failures of others?)

Reg likes this quote great quote from a great man:

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." - Winston Churchill

Some of us are getting pretty good at that! Very, very enthusiastic ... Or, as I like to say:

"Old enough to know better, young to resist." - not Churchill
